Getting Legal Assistance
You are facing a legal situation for which you require some help. You may be familiar with some aspects of law, as legal papers have entered our lives in one form or another many times at work and at home in active adulthood. After a careful consideration and depending on your level of confidence, as well as your legal needs, you have decided which way to get help.
SELF-SERVICE:
You decided to use self-service forms. That means you do your research and try to get as much information as you can. You buy inexpensive templates and forms and fill them out online. There are many online and regular stores that sell those templates. Some of them come with CD instructions. In general those are confusing, they do not address your particular situation and you still end up calling paralegals and attorneys.
PARALEGAL:
You decided to hire paralegal. This professional usually has four years of college and a legal degree, or many years of practice under the supervision of attorney. Some state recognize independent paralegals and Arizona requires licensing, as well as continuous education. Legal Document Preparers or independent paralegals ofter provide flexible hours and work from their home offices. Some are also notaries. They can specialize in one area of practice, or a broader legal field.
LAWYER:
You are hiring a lawyer. This individual has a law school and has completed a bar exam for the State in which he or she practices law. Only lawyer can represent you at the court, should your matter become contested and only lawyer can provide with the legal advice. Drawback are higher fees and you mostly, sill, work with their paralegal on a frequent basis, seeing your lawyer every once in awhile.
The legal system is open to the public and everyone has a right to self-represent in most of civil and family law cases. If you are only looking for a guidance, court library provides great resources. There are many good online libraries, Westlaw Online Research is my favorite!
