Who Are Legal Document Preparers
What does it mean hiring an LDA?
A legal document assistant (LDA, also known as “document technician”, “legal document preparer”, “legal technician”, “online legal document provider” or “legal document clerk”) in the United States is a person who is a non-lawyer but authorized to assist with the preparation of legal instruments.
Independent Paralegals and what is that they do:
Sometimes legal document preparers are called independent paralegals.
Paralegals, in general, work under supervision of attorney. Paralegals may not give or provide legal advice. Providing legal advice by paralegal is considered unauthorized practice of law. Only the licensed attorney may provide legal advice.
But what happens when you don’t have or didn’t hire an attorney?
Are you safe without a legal advice?
Most legal documents preparers had worked under supervisions of attorney for many years and have a good insight in legal profession. They also have an excellent written communications skills, legal language and knowledge of the court procedures.
Are you safe hiring a legal document preparer, especially if you are involved in litigation? The answer is, as long as you are confident that your legal mater does not require attorney’s advice and you feel knowledgable about your case, you can represent yourself.
